eBay’s Q3 revenues rise 84% to $531 million
EBay Inc. reported revenue of $531 million for the third-quarter ended Sept. 30, a rise of 84% from $288.8 million in the year-ago period, as its number of active users rose 55% to 37.4 million. It reported increases of about 50% each in the number of gross merchandise sales, registered users and listings, and said revenue at its PayPal online payment service rose 83%.
"Q3 was another very strong quarter for eBay and its community," said president and CEO Meg Whitman. "With record levels of registered users, listings, and gross merchandise sales, along with a strong performance by PayPal, eBay`s business continues to gain momentum going into the holiday season."
EBay, which exceeded its earlier revenue guidance of $515 million, said Q3 gross merchandise sales rose 53% year-to-year to $5.8 billion from $3.8 billion, while transaction revenue, covering the fees it charges sellers, rose 96% to $517.1 million from $263.6 million. Its Q3 PayPal revenues rose to $108.4 million, up 83% from $59.3 million a year ago.
EBay said its number of confirmed registered users as of the end of Q3 totaled 85.5 million, up 56% from 54.9 million a year ago and a rise of 10.2 million from Q2. The increase includes 3.2 million users that came to eBay through its acquisition in July of EachNet. It said the number of active users, or those who have bid, bought or listed on eBay over the past 12 months, rose to 37.4 million, an increase of 55% over 24.2 million a year ago.
EBay said it expects revenue to reach as high as $590 million for the fourth quarter, $15 million more than an earlier guidance.
