Hannaford Bros. to roll out HR self-service online
Employee training is a cost center for retailers, and one way to control that cost is to keep turnover down. Hannaford Bros. Co, a New England and New York-based grocery store chain, is aiming to reduce its 60% annual turnover rate – already low by industry standards – by another 2.5% by moving some HR functions onto the web for better employee access. "If we can provide better ‘customer service’ to our associates, if they can view their pay and benefit information online and answer their questions themselves, they’ll be happier and therefore less likely to leave," says Bill Punsky, Hannaford`s human resources information services manager.
The chain will this summer roll out HR self-service at its 115 stores using an HR package from Lawson software and in-store kiosks from Compaq Computer Corp. Employees will be able to access their personal information on file, such as address, emergency contact information, and designated benefit recipients, from the web-enabled kiosks or home PCs. The company expects to add functionality later in the year that will let employees complete benefits enrollment online.
Moving these HR functions to the web could save as many as 250,000 HR-related faxes a year, says Punsky. "This will present information in a much more user-friendly format. It will be less frustrating than going through some of the mechanisms we have today," he adds.
