Amazon book sales rise faster through “search inside the book” feature
When Amazon.com Inc. introduced its “Search Inside the Book” on Oct. 23, it didn’t take long for customers to respond with an increase in purchases. Sales in the first five days rose 9 percentage points faster than sales of books not yet in the new search program, Amazon says. “We’re truly excited by the positive response from customers,” founder and CEO Jeff Bezos said. “Search Inside the Book is driving increased sales.”
The new search function enables shoppers to search for words on any page from more than 120,000 book titles, covering more than 33 million pages. A customer looking for books on architecture, for example, can search for that term to get a list of books available on Amazon that contain “architecture” in text pages or in the book title. By clicking on a link to any of those books, the customer can view excerpts and click another link to see the full page on which the excerpt appears.
Amazon launched the book search service with the cooperation of 190 book publishers, including Time Warner Book Group, Simon & Schuster Inc. and Random House Inc. Since the service started, however, Amazon has received requests from 37 other publishers who want to participate, Amazon said.
