Online holiday shopping continues to attract new consumers

A third more consumers than last year plan to conduct at least some of their holiday shopping online this year, says a new consumer survey conducted by Harris Interactive for Blue Martini Inc. In a pre-holiday shopping survey a year ago, 30% of consumers said they would do some shopping online; this year, 41% said they will shop online.

82% of consumers said they are motivated to purchase online by better prices or deals than offline, 70% by the convenience of home delivery, 69% by the desire to avoid crowds, 59% by unique merchandise, 39% by the fact that they want to shop at a particular retailer but don’t live near a store and 21% by the availability of online gift registries.

Harris Interactive conducted the study on behalf Blue Martini Software by interviewing a nationally representative sample of 1,021 Americans ages 18 or older by telephone from Oct. 23 - 26.
