Solution offers customers durable, versatile, proven technology with high-speed, accurate response

Orlando, FL-KioskCom 2002 Booth #728- March 5, 2002 - Synaptics® Incorporated (NASDAQ: SYNA) - the leader in capacitive touch-sensing technology - and Zytronic Display Ltd. (LSE:ZYT.L) (Newcastle, United Kingdom) - a leading provider of touch sensors, optical filters and laminates - are previewing their jointly developed advanced capacitive touchscreen sensor system. The TouchScreen™ product will be demonstrated at the KioskCom Conference in Orlando, FL.

A development agreement between the two companies leverages Synaptics` market-leading touch-sensing technology with Zytronic`s experience in producing touch sensors, optical filters and laminates. The two companies have developed a durable, dependable, and hermetically sealed touchscreen that is virtually impervious to damage from moisture, heat, and vandalism. The TouchScreen product is designed to meet today`s demanding requirements for ATMs, Web phones, gaming machines, ticket dispensers, medical displays, industrial displays, gas pump displays, and similar systems.

"Our capacitive TouchPad interface devices have been utilized in over 40 million notebook computers to date, and our expertise in capacitive sensing allows us to leverage our technology and apply it to other markets," explains Synaptics` Vice President of Marketing and Business Development, Richard McCaskill. "We looked at the markets that utilize touchscreens, and worked with Zytronic to develop our superior TouchScreen solution that offers solid-state reliability, durability and accuracy that is imperative for any touch-sensing interface."

The new TouchScreen product utilizes Synaptics` proprietary one-chip controller, which is based on Synaptics` capacitive touch-sensing interface products. The TouchScreen solution combines Synaptics` controller with its proprietary driver and calibration software and Zytronic`s exceptional capacitive glass touchscreen sensor. The resulting solution uniquely offers customers excellent clarity, high-speed response, accuracy, and extreme durability at a competitive cost.

"Synaptics and Zytronic are ideal development partners because of their complementary core competencies," explains David Huntley, Managing Director, Zytronic Plc. "Our expertise lies in optical filters and vandal-resistant laminates, as well as the manufacture of projected capacitive touch sensors by embedding fine wires in high-quality glass. Synaptics` strengths are their in-depth knowledge of capacitive sensing and control electronics. The product line resulting from this partnership combines these competencies into a seamless, accurate, and reliable touch-screen solution of the highest quality."

Synaptics offers a variety of interface solutions that add value to the kiosk market, including fingerprint security, capacitive keypads for data entry, and capacitive touch pads, scrolling devices and pointing sticks for display navigation.

Both Synaptics` capacitive technology and Zytronic`s touch sensor technology are proven and reliable. As the leader in touch pad technology for the notebook computer market, Synaptics has shipped millions of capacitive touchpads to notebook OEMs since 1995. With this new capacitive TouchScreen, Synaptics leverages its leadership in the capacitive touch-sensing and interface technology to expand into new markets.

Samples and evaluation kits will be available in Q2 CY 2002. Please contact sales@synaptics.com or sales@zytronic.co.uk for more information.
