Traffic to retail sites starts to grow, Hitwise reports


Traffic to retail web sites has started to increase in the build-up to Christmas shopping, research and online traffic monitoring company Hitwise reports. Traffic to online retail sites as a share of all Internet traffic has risen to 6.16%, up 11% in the last three months, Hitwise says.

Hitwise reports that the shopping categories which have experienced the largest increase in market share of online retail traffic in the past three months include toys & hobbies, up 31.2%, and flowers & gifts, up 27.1%.

Traffic to e-shopping malls has also grown strongly in the last three months. Shopping.com’s traffic was up 41% , Nextag’s, 28%, Yahoo! Shopping’s 22%, and PriceGrabber’s 17%.

Hitwise reports that the most popular shopping sites, by number of visitors, for the week ending Nov. 8 were: Amazon, Wal-Mart, Target, JC Penney, Sears, Overstock, HSN, Costco, Sam’s Club and Kmart.
