CyberSource(R) Announces Details of New Patent-Pending Credit Card Fraud Scoring Technology

Surpasses Accuracy of Single Model Scoring Systems by as Much as 100 Percent; Provides Highly Accurate Scoring by Successfully Blending Multiple Detection Model Scores

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., April 10 -- CyberSource Corporation (Nasdaq: CYBS), a leading provider of risk management and electronic payment solutions for enterprise businesses, today disclosed details of its new patent-pending CyberSource Fusion Scoring technology, a key component of the Advanced Fraud Screen enhanced by Visa, commonly used in card-not-present environments such as Internet, call center and interactive voice response/IVR sales channels. The CyberSource Fusion Scoring technology represents a first-of-its-kind means to successfully blend multiple fraud screen model scores to produce highly accurate risk prediction scores that can improve a merchant`s ability to thwart fraud attempts and convert more valid orders.

CyberSource is the only risk management solution provider to develop this type of hybrid multi-model score fusion technology that overcomes the accuracy limitations of stand-alone standard neural network and rules-based systems. The CyberSource Fusion Scoring technology combines the benefits of advanced neural network, rules-based and matrix screening model scores. It blends in real-time the results of each model and appropriately adjusts the weight of each model score to produce a highly accurate risk score between 0-99. A merchant can use the score to confidently decline, accept or choose to further review an order.

"The CyberSource Fusion Scoring technology leverages the strengths of several fraud screening models, while minimizing or negating possible side-effects, allowing CyberSource to provide fraud detection scores that are as much as 100 percent more accurate than either a stand-alone rules-based system or a standard neural network," said Jeff King, Director of Risk Product Management at CyberSource Corporation. "We are pleased to be the only provider to offer this unprecedented risk management technology that ultimately enables merchants to reduce the costly impact of fraud while converting more valid orders."

Multiple Models Combined - Highly Accurate Detection and Scoring
Unlike any other technology available today, the CyberSource Fusion Scoring technology combines the strengths of each of the following models into a single technology to provide the industry`s most accurate fraud detection and scoring solution, the CyberSource Advanced Fraud Screen enhanced by Visa (AFS). Merchants who use AFS, which leverages the new technology, receive a single risk score, fused from each of the screening models below, to provide a highly accurate "probability of fraud" figure designed to help assess whether to accept, decline or further review an order.
-- Rules-based fraud screen: compares credit-card transactions with a set of rules before converting an order. They detect previously well-defined inconsistencies, such as gibberish or obscenities in the name field and/or an unusual number of items purchased at a single time. Rules-based fraud screens are good at detecting obvious fraud and company-specific fraud patterns.
-- Advanced neural net fraud screen: uses sophisticated statistical models created by comparing the order in question to patterns derived from a transaction history database. This method uses historical, accurate data to provide a base against which to judge current credit card transactions. Neural nets can detect more complex patterns than rules-based systems including subtle patterns of activity across multiple merchants and cardholders.
-- Matrix fraud screen: checks orders against a database of current online or in-store credit card account "transaction events" seen by participating card association(s). This model is updated more frequently than former standard neural net technology, making it possible to detect more first-time fraud and more quickly detect emerging fraud trends. There is a very low rate of valid order rejection, and the process is invisible to consumers.

About the CyberSource Advanced Fraud Screen enhanced by Visa
The CyberSource Advanced Fraud Screen enhanced by Visa (AFS) is a CyberSource hosted service that enables merchants to more accurately identify and stop fraudulent orders, minimize the rejection of valid orders, and improve bottom-line profitability.

It is the only system to utilize up-to-the-minute purchase activity, from both online and in-store purchases, along with the new CyberSource Fusion Scoring technology, to help identify and accurately score potentially fraudulent orders before they wreak havoc on a business. The increased accuracy of the system also helps to reduce false positive results where a valid order may be declined due to inaccurate scoring.

AFS can be used on a stand-alone basis or in conjunction with other components of the CyberSource Enterprise Risk Management Solution (RMS), such as CyberSource Case Management, CyberSource Risk Analysis and/or CyberSource Risk Manager, the industry`s first extensible decision management platform designed to centralize control and simplify management of transaction risk processes for increased operational efficiency.
