MLB.com switches site operations to GSI Commerce
MLB Advanced Media is switching the e-commerce, fulfillment and customer service operations of MLB.com to GSI Commerce Inc. from Digital River Inc. MLB will continue to handle marketing and merchandising for the retail section of MLB.com.
"We conducted a thorough analysis of e-commerce providers in order to upgrade our e-commerce offering and provide the best possible shopping experience to our fans,” says Noah Garden, senior vice president of e-commerce for MLB Advanced Media. GSI also operates its own fulfillment warehouse and has extensive experience in serving other online sporting goods retailers, including SportsAuthority.com as well retail web sites of other profesional sports organizations, Garden says. He adds that MLB.com will offer enhanced site search, navigation and personalization features with GSI.
GSI will also handle the same operations for the 30 official MLB Club web sites for individual baseball franchises.
In addition, under its contract with GSI, MLB will provide licensed MLB apparel and other sporting goods to GSI-operated web sites that sell baseball-related goods.
MLB Advanced Media did not comment on the contract it declined to renew with Digital River. Digital River CEO Joel Ronning says his company will continue to handle MLB’s web site operations through the end of this year and through the transition to GSI in the first quarter of next year. He adds that Digital River does not expect the loss of MLB as a client to have a material impact on its revenue and earnings.
