Apparel tops the list of what consumers are buying online


Online shoppers spent $2.5 billion on apparel in November and through the second week in December, says the eSpending report by Goldman, Sachs & Co., Harris Interactive, and Nielsen/NetRatings, an increase of 35% over last year, making it the largest online retail category.

Next was toys and video games, where shoppers spent $1.6 billion in the same time period, the eSpending report says, up 27%.

The most popular online shopping categories by revenue, with year-over-year growth through Dec. 13 were:
Apparel/clothing: $2.463 billion, 35%
Toys/video games: $1.576 billion, 27%
Consumer electronics: $1.375 billion, 12%
Video/DVD: $1.214 billion, 89%
Books: $1.046 billion, 33%

The data are based on a survey of 7,178 online users in Harris Interactive’s online user data base.
