Holiday sales at ToysRUs.com grew 2.8% to $184 million from $179 million last year, the company reports. Adjusting for the sale of ToysRUs.com Japan to Toys R Us Japan in the third quarter 2003, holiday sales at ToysRUs.com increased 8% from the year earlier, Toys R Us says.
The company tells InternetRetailer.com that Q4 ‘03 marked the second year that the company turned a profit in the fourth quarter and that 2003’s Q4 profit exceeded 2002 Q4’s profit.
Year-to-date ToysRUs.com sales have increased 11% to $362 million from $326 million in the comparable 48-week period a year-ago, with the increase 12.9% year-to-date after adjusting for the sale of ToysRUs.com Japan, the company says.
Companywide sales increased 0.9% to $4.42 billion for the holiday period--the nine-weeks ended Jan 3--compared to $4.38 billion for the comparable period last year. Excluding the impact of currency translation, total sales decreased 2.7% for the nine-week period, the company reports. Comparable U.S. toy store sales declined 4.9% for the nine weeks compared to last year and 3.4% year-to-date.
ToysRUs.com also reports that core toys and baby sales were up 13% during the holidays to $141 million from $125 million and video game sales declined by 7% for the season to $42 million from $45 million.
Core toy and baby sales for ToyRUs.com year-to-date are up nearly 20% to $276 million from $230 million, while video game sales are down almost 9% to $69 million from $75 million.
