Tesco.com’s sales rise 24% year-over-year in 2005

Online sales at U.K. grocer and general merchandiser Tesco PLC rose 24% last year to £719 million, as total UK sales rose 9.8% to £29.5 billion, the retailer says in its annual review. Comp store sales rose 9%.

Profit at Tesco.com rose 51.8% to £36 million, the company said. By comparison, worldwide profit grew 18.8% to £2.03 billion on total worldwide sales of £37.1 billion, it said. Tesco.com's sales are limited to the UK, but Tesco's worldwide sales include operations in Asia and other parts of Europe.

Tesco provides online shopping of grocery items for 98% of the U.K. with fulfillment handled through about 300 supermarkets. In addition to grocery items, Tesco.com offers a Tesco Extra section that sells non-food products including consumer electronics, books, music and DVD movies. Consumers can purchase or rent DVDs.

Tesco.com also offers a digital music library of more than 500,000 song tracks and claims a 10% share of the U.K.’s online music download market.
