Amazon ships out more than 100 million holiday orders

Amazon.com isn’t breaking out final sales yet, but it’s already clear that the biggest online retailer wrapped up another successful holiday season.

Over the holidays, Amazon, No. 1 in the Internet Retailer Top 400 Guide to Retail Web Sites, processed at least 108 million orders and shipped on time 99% of the time, the company says.

On a busy day just prior to Christmas, Amazon says it shipped more than 2.7 million units worldwide and overall fulfilled orders from more than 200 countries. Gift certificates were also popular this holiday season. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas Amazon sold more than 600,000 gift certificates, the company says.

Amazon expected a record holiday season to make a big impact in the fourth quarter. In its most recent earnings release, Amazon expected sales in the fourth quarter of $3.1 billion, an increase of 22% from Q4 sales of $2.5 billion in 2004.

For the full year, Amazon expects web sales to rise 26% to $8.7 billion from $6.9 billion in 2004.
