LEADING BRAND NAME RETAILERS SELECT ENTERPRISE LOCATION-BASED SERVICES FROM VICINITY CORPORATION
Vicinity`s Customer Roster Includes Many Fortune 500 Companies
SUNNYVALE, Calif. - May 20, 2002 - Vicinity Corporation (Nasdaq: VCNT), a
leading provider of Web, wireless and speech-based Enterprise Location-Based
Services, today identified a number of leading brand name retailers and
companies as customers.
Vicinity provides robust location services for hundreds of enterprise
corporations, including Best Buy, Ford Motor Company, Harley-Davidson Motor
Company, Hollywood Entertainment Corporation (Hollywood Video), and Payless
ShoeSource. From a website, wireless device or telephone, Vicinity services
enable the end-customers of these retailers to easily find the nearest
location using different search criteria. For instance, a user can find out
“which store is open on Saturday?” or “does the store offer installation?”
In addition to providing this detailed data, the technology produces maps
and driving directions, including LineDrive, an exclusive feature that
creates a turn-by-turn “blueprint” of the driving route.
“We have a world-class roster of Fortune 500 and Global 2000 customers, a
reflection of the top-notch quality of our enterprise location services,”
said Chuck Berger, president and CEO of Vicinity. “The five companies noted
here are proof of the power of location information in the overall brand
marketing mix, from diverse industries ranging from automotive to
entertainment. Our clients consistently tell us how their Vicinity-powered
locators increase sales, build customer loyalty, and reduce call center
costs.”
“Payless ShoeSource has seen the importance of our location services
increase as customers become more savvy online,” said Rhonda Wells, Director
of Consumer Insights, Market Research and Strategy at Payless ShoeSource,
North America’s largest family footwear retailer with 4,974 stores. “By
enabling our customers to quickly and easily find the nearest location, we
create a stronger brand relationship, and ultimately boost sales by
delivering interested buyers to the front doors of our retail outlets. The
location-based services provided by Vicinity are seamless to the consumer,
and extremely pain-free for us to manage and track.”
As a platform independent server application, Vicinity Location Server (VLS)
technology meets the needs of large corporations by enhancing the end-user
customer experience through easy-to-use Web, wireless or speech-based
location services. The VLS suite of services includes data management
functionality, implementation support, reporting, and comprehensive maps and
driving directions.
VLS transparently connects consumers accessing a company’s site to
Vicinity’s proprietary database of maps and driving directions of the United
States, Canada and Europe. When a consumer enters the address of his or her
current location, Vicinity’s patented search technology queries the location
database and returns a list of the closest stores, outlets or branch
offices. The user then selects the specific location to display the related
maps and driving directions.
