Workplace web shopping doubles purchases from home

Workplace desktops are used to buy twice as much merchandise online as computers plugged in at home, according to comScore Networks, a provider of research on online customer behavior. Data from a global network of more than 100,000 desktops monitored by the company showed that the dollar value of personal purchases made from a workplace computer averaged $85 vs. $45 from home computers, comScore Networks chairman Gian Fulgoni told attendees at this week’s e-Tail Solutions Forum in Chicago.

“It’s not surprising – they’re taking advantage of the bandwidth at work,” he said. ComScore research also shows that 40% fewer purchases originate from computers whose Internet access is powered by a free ISPs than from other with other Internet access. “One theory is that it’s not the main computer the household uses for commerce—there may be another computer for that,” says Fulgoni.
