Barnes & Noble online holiday sales stay flat
The holiday shopping season turned out well for many online retailers, but Christmas e-commerce sales grew only 1% for Barnes & Noble Inc.
Online sales between October 29, 2005, and December 31, 2005, totaled $106.1 million, compared with $105 million in 2004. Total 2005 holiday sales for Barnes & Noble exceeded $1.2 billion, up 15.4% from $1.04 billion in 2004. Online revenue represented 8.8% of total holiday sales in 2005 and 10% in 2004.
For the 48 weeks ended December 31, 2005, Barnes & Noble total online sales rose 5.2%, compared with the same period in 2004. Online sales for the 48 weeks totaled $393.1 million versus $373.7 million in 2004. Total sales for the 48-week period in 2005 were $4.4 billion, compared with $3.8 billion in 2004. Online revenue represented 8.9% of total sales, compared with 10% for the same period in 2004.
Barnes & Noble, No. 23 in the Internet Retailer Top 400 Guide to Retail Web Sites, will issue full-year earnings for 2005 and guidance for 2006 on March 16. In addition to the web site, the company operates 824 stores in 50 states.
