Napster subscribers total doubles in a year
Napster Inc. has announced the number of premium paid subscribers to its digital music subscription service has for the first time exceeded 500,000. Napster also announced the number of college student subscribers has risen above 50,000. The combined total marks 100% subscriber base growth from 2004 to 2005, the company says.
Napster, No. 269 in the Internet Retailer Top 400 Guide to Retail Web Sites, registered $12 million in sales for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2005. The company will provide details on third quarter 2006 fiscal year operations and performance Feb. 8. Its service now is available in the United States, Canada, Germany and the U.K.
Last month, Napster, in a move designed to attract live concertgoers who may want to purchase a digital download of their favorite concert, launched a new marketing agreement with Instant Live, a division of Clear Channel Entertainment Music Group. Under the arrangement, Napster will have exclusive digital distribution rights to Instant Live content. Napster subscribers will be able to stream or download full-length performance recordings of both existing and newly recorded Instant Live content as part of their monthly subscription fee.
