Google introduces low-cost site search service

For as little as $100 a year, retailers can let customers Google the merchandise on their sites. Google Inc. announced today a new service called Google Customer Search Business Edition that lets small businesses use Google as a site search tool.

The $100 price covers searching up to 5,000 web pages; the price goes up to $500 for searching as many as 50,000 pages. Google says setting up the hosted service is a three-step process that takes less than 10 minutes.

Google introduced a customized search service in October that delivers ads along with search results. The new service lets the web site owner turn off the ads. It also provides for customization of the search box to match the look and feel of the site and for grouping of search results.

Google also offers more sophisticated site search engines, including the Google Mini, which starts at $1,995 per year and includes hardware as well as software.

“Millions of businesses have a web presence but offer users no ability to search their site,” says Dave Girouard, vice president and general manager of the Google Enterprise unit that provides the site search services. “As Google continues to make search technology more accessible to businesses of all sizes—first with our appliances and now with hosted search services—we are reducing the hurdles of cost, complexity and time so that small businesses can help customers find what they need every step of the way.”
