High-tech wages hold strong in Q2, reports the Yoh Index

Wages for highly-skilled technology professionals in 2007 continue to surpass pay rates from 2006. According to the Yoh Index of Technology Wages, a quarterly compensation index, the average hourly wage for high-tech workers was $31.61 during the middle of the second quarter, only a slight dip from the previous quarter`s $31.80. That rate was the highest average wage recorded by the Yoh Index of Technology Wages since its start in 2001.

"It`s not unusual for overall pay rates to follow slow spring and summer hiring trends, but technology wages still held on strong this year and continued to improve over 2006," says Jim Lanzalotto, vice president of strategy and marketing for Yoh. "Despite a recent report that tech professionals were less confident about jobs this past month, top talent has every reason to stay confident about the job market. We are seeing a good, steady pace for hiring tech professionals with high-level skills and deep-rooted industry experience. We should keep an eye out for more competitive wages to come during the remainder of 2007, and into 2008 as the marketplace continues to heat up."

The Yoh Index of Technology Wages reached 112.93 during the second quarter of 2007, from a base in January 2001 of 100. The index shows a 4.29% increase in wages when compared with the same period in 2006.

The Yoh Index of Technology Wages is compiled quarterly by Yoh, a recruiting services firm for technology and professional staff. Among the high-tech positions and their average hourly rates reported by Yoh that affect retailing are:

  • Database administrator, $57.36
  • Hardware designer, $65.63
  • Java developer, $55.62
  • Mechanical engineer, $42.47
  • Network administrator, $38.77
  • Project manager, $58.65
The Yoh Index is built on data compiled by Yoh`s 75 U.S. offices and uses employment activity of as many as 5,000 technology professionals outsourced on short- and long-term projects by more than 1,000 employers.
