Subscription sales for Apple’s iPhone are setting a brisk pace for AT&T Inc.
AT&T which holds the service and activation contract for the iPhone from Apple Inc., No. 15 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, says it has activated service for more than 146,000 iPhone subscribers so far, of which more than 40% are new subscribers. “Mobility is a major growth engine for AT&T,” says CEO Randall Stephenson. “Our launch with Apple of the breakthrough iPhone has quickly redefined customer expectations for their wireless experience, initial response was unprecedented, and sales in July continue to be strong.”
Industry estimates put first weekend iPhone sales as high as 700,000, which led to some frustration among buyers who could not use any of the phone’s features until AT&T activation took place.
All iPhone monthly service plans are based on a two-year agreement with AT&T. Individual plans are priced at $59.99 for 450 minutes, $79.99 for 900 minutes and $99.99 for 1,350 minutes. All plans include unlimited data (e-mail and web), Visual Voicemail, 200 SMS text messages, rollover minutes and unlimited mobile-to-mobile, and a one-time activation fee of $36.
