Indigo books 17% web sales growth in third quarter

Indigo Books & Music Inc., Canada’s largest book retailer, increased its third quarter e-commerce sales by 17.2% to $21 million from $17.9 million in Q3 fiscal 2005. The sales figures are in U.S. dollars. "We know from recent comScore data that this performance and the related customer conversion ratio outpaced the competition,” says Jonathan Ehrlich, executive vice president at chapters.indigo.ca.

In the third quarter, the web represented 8% of total sales of $268.2 million versus Q3 fiscal 2005 when e-commerce made up 7% of total sales of $248.4 million. From quarter to quarter, Indigo, No. 132 in the Internet Retailer Top 400 Guide to Retail Web Sites, increased total sales by 8%.

"This holiday season was particularly important for us. It confirmed that we are benefiting on an ongoing basis from the investments we have made over the last three years in all areas of the business,” says Indigo CEO Heather Reisman. “The SAP inventory management system, the new point-of-sale systems, the Indigo loyalty program, and the increased focus on customer service and merchandising are all bearing fruit.”
