Targeted searches boost 800.com’s revenue, the company says
Implementing Mercado Software Inc.’s IntuiFind search product helped 800.com boost sales more than 60% during the last holiday shopping season, 800.com, an online retailer of consumer electronics, movies, and music, reported today.
"IntuiFind’s intuitive linguistic capabilities guide our customers directly to the products they want, and that translates into satisfied customers and increased sales," said Dave Watrous, vice president of information services at 800.com. "Better search significantly improved our sales during this year’s holiday shopping season, increasing browser-to-buyer conversion rates, improving customer satisfaction and retention rates, and expanding site usage. 800.com experienced a 61% gain in revenues over 1999, accompanied by a 31% decrease in marketing expense, and much of that can be attributed to the fact that buyers quickly found what they looked for on our site, made purchases, and probably told others that we were a great place to shop."
Mercados’ IntuiFind helps customers find exactly what they are looking for, regardless of spelling, terminology, or how products are organized in the 800.com database. It allows searches on the basis of customers’ own wording, then matches up that wording with the terminology in the 800.com database. It also analyzes search results and uses unsuccessful searches to improve the search process. Mercado’s major customers include Sears.com, Tower Records, Blockbuster Video, Webvan, e-Bags, 800.com, Hastings, Vitessa, Firmbuy, Outpurchase.com, Caterpillar Corp., US Office Products, and Quelle.
