Wakefern Food Corporation Implementing Kronos® Solution for Centralized View of 47,000-Employee Workforce
Nation`s largest retailer-owned cooperative centralizing and streamlining workforce management to provide better store-level support
CHICAGO, May 24, 2005 — Wakefern Food Corporation, the marketing and distribution arm for ShopRite supermarkets, is implementing the Workforce Central® suite from Kronos® Incorporated (Nasdaq: KRON) for its entire workforce. Wakefern, one of the largest private employers in New Jersey, selected Kronos as the first part of an overall initiative to centralize and standardize store applications to meet the needs of its business, customers, and employees. Kronos made this announcement in conjunction with the Retail Systems Conference & Exposition being held May 24-26 in Chicago. Kronos is exhibiting in booth #2104.
"Our cooperative is comprised of 43 members, 225 stores, and more than 47,000 employees," said Natan Tabak, senior vice president and CIO at Wakefern Food Corporation. "We needed a scalable solution that was easy to implement and requires minimal support. Kronos offers the whole package, from its market leadership and longstanding tradition of providing excellent service, to its rapid implementation and rollout methodology. All of these strengths mean our company will be enjoying the benefits of Kronos very quickly."
"Minors": a major benefit
A significant benefit to Wakefern is Kronos` robust scheduling functionality that enables strict compliance to minor age work regulations. Such regulations restrict minors to a maximum number of hours/shifts per week and regulate earliest-start and latest-end times, and they vary by state and age of minor employee. The Kronos rules engine manages multiple school calendars to ensure that minor-age employees are not scheduled in violation of these minor employee rules.
Kronos technology is easily configured and integrated with other retail systems to manage the unique needs of the retail workforce. Complex pay rules for various employee populations are streamlined to ensure employees are paid properly for the hours they work, within the parameters set by various labor regulations.
"Minimizing exposure to minor-age compliance issues is extremely important for grocers such as Wakefern," said John Anderson, retail industry director at Kronos. "Kronos technology helps grocers balance labor law compliance and cost control issues with their objectives for maintaining high levels of service — essentially optimizing the needs of their business, customers, and employees."
