AAFES marches to $1 billion in web sales

It took a decade to achieve, but the Army & Air Force Exchange Service now commands $1 billion in annual web sales.

AAFES, which operates the U.S. military’s PX system, also maintains four e-commerce sites: AAFES.com, USMC-MCCS.org, Navy-Nex.com and CG-Exchange. The PX organization topped the $1 billion sales mark in late July when an Air National Guardsman from Ohio purchased an Apple laptop computer for his son.

“Moving access beyond select brick-and-mortar locations and into cyberspace has produced additional sales that have ultimately helped strengthen the Exchange,” says AAFES Exchange Online Store chief marketing officer Richard Sheff.

Since AAFES, No. 58 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, launched its first web store in 1997, the e-commerce sites have processed 5 million orders from 1.2 million customers, says Sheff.
