E-commerce accounts for almost one quarter of Staples’ 2005 sales
E-commerce accounts for 23.6% of business for office superstore Staples Inc. The chain’s online gross sales hit $3.8 billion for the year ended Jan. 28, 2006, compared with $16.1 billion total gross sales. The $3.8 billion represents a 27% growth spurt over 2004’s $3 billion.
For the year ended Jan. 28, 2006, net income for Staples, No. 4 in the Internet Retailer Top 400 Guide to Retail Web Sites, hit $834.4 million, an 18% increase over the previous year’s $708.4 million. Fourth quarter total net income hit $290 million, an increase of 15% from $252.2 million for the same period the previous year. “We also made solid progress on several initiatives to sustain our long term growth,” says CEO Ron Sargent.
Staples sells a wide range of office products, including supplies, technology, furniture and business services. The company serves consumers and businesses ranging from home-based businesses to Fortune 500 companies in 21 countries throughout North and South America, Europe, and Asia.
