eBay’s international head to spearhead philanthropy initiative

Matt Bannick, president of eBay International, will move later this year into a newly created position to spearhead eBay’s initiatives in corporate philanthropy and the developing world, reporting to CEO Meg Whitman, eBay said today.

"At eBay I've been fortunate to travel around the world and see first-hand how people everywhere are empowering themselves through the Internet,” said Bannick, who now reports to John Donahoe, president of eBay Marketplaces. “I'm excited to build and manage our efforts around philanthropy and the developing world to help fulfill eBay's original vision."

EBay has not named a successor to Bannick, who will take several months to make the transition to his new position. Executives currently reporting to Bannick include Philipp Justus, senior vice president of eBay Europe; Jay Lee, vice president of eBay Asia/Pacific; and Martin Wu, CEO of eBay China.

Bannick has held several management positions since joining eBay in 1999. He spearheaded eBay’s international presence, expanding it from five countries in 2000 to 25 two years later. He also oversaw eBay’s acquisition of Paris-based iBazar as well as other investments in South Korea, China, Australia and Latin America.

Following eBay’s acquisition of PayPal in 2002, Bannick served as the payment unit’s first post-acquisition general manager. He returned to eBay International in 2004 as its president.
