January Internet searches rise 39% to new monthly record of 5.7 billion

The number of Internet searches reached a new monthly tally in January, rising 39% year-over-year to 5.7 billion from 4.1 billion, Nielsen/NetRatings reports.

“Web users are conducting more searches not because they can`t find what they`re looking for, but because search as a utility has become deeply ingrained into people`s everyday lives,” said Ken Cassar, chief analyst, Nielsen/NetRatings.

Google continued to lead in search market share at 48.2% in January, up 1.1 percentage points from 47.1% a year ago, followed by Yahoo Search at 22.2%, up from 21.2%, and MSN Search, at 11%, down from 12.8% a year ago, Nielsen said.

Nielsen also noted that January’s total of 5.7 billion searches was up 12% from the 5.1 billion searches in December 2005.
