BabyUniverse grows e-commerce sales 66% in 2005

No one is crying at e-retailer BabyUniverse Inc. Total sales for fourth quarter 2005 shot up 80.3% to $8.2 million compared with $4.5 million during the same period the previous year. Total sales for 2005 increased 66.1% to $23.7 million compared with 2004’s $14.3 million.

BabyUniverse, which operates BabyUniverse.com and DreamtimeBaby.com, sells brand name baby, toddler and maternity products. The company this quarter acquired PoshTots.com and PoshLiving.com and will continue to pursue acquisitions of female-oriented e-commerce, marketing and new media companies, a company spokesperson says.

With the acquisition of the high-margin PoshTots business, BabyUniverse expects its gross profit margin to continue to increase this year, says John Textor, chairman and CEO. The overarching goal of BabyUniverse is to establish itself as a market-leading e-commerce business focused on the high-growth female marketplace, he adds.

The company is No. 224 in the Internet Retailer Top 400 Guide to Retail Web Sites.
