Drugstore.com opens health savings account-related web store

Drugstore.com has rolled out an online store designed for health savings account, or HSA, holders. Drugstore.com’s HSA Store identifies more than 3,000 eligible products, tracks purchases, provides an HSA-only receipt and offers additional resources to help consumer-driven health plan customers record expenses for tax purposes. Health savings accounts are an alternative to traditional employer-paid health plans and are managed by consumers.

The Internet is ready made for such a program, says David Lonczak, vice president and chief marketing officer at Drugstore.com, which is No. 35 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide. That’s because the online retail environment provides a store with eligible products “all in one place,” he says. “We’re pleased to add this new service for customers with HSAs in addition to our popular FSA Store.”

FSAs, or flexible spending accounts, enable consumers to pay for certain health care expenses, within annual limits, on a pre-tax basis.

Exante Financial Services, a subsidiary of health care insurer UnitedHealth Group, is the first to partner with Drugstore.com to provide its clients with direct access to a co-branded HSA web site. Exante also hosts an FSA Store via Drugstore.com.

An estimated 4.5 million lives are covered by consumer-driven HSA plans, Drugstore.com says, which require consumers to maintain records of eligible health care-related expenses. Drugstore.com also has formed a relationship with Doclopedia to provide a free online personal medical organizer for recording medical history, doctor visits and prescription drugs. Customers can link to the HSA Tracker from the HSA Store home page.
