Shop.org broadens its mission to advocacy and public policy

Shop.org, the trade association of online retailers that is a unit of the National Retail Federation, is expanding its mission to focus on advocacy and public policy. As a part of the initiative, Shop.org is creating a Policy Advisory Group, comprised of online retail executives, to identify potential issues for online retailers and provide guidance in advocacy efforts.

“The online retail industry needs a strong voice in the policy arena to match its growing economic force,” says Scott Silverman, executive director, Shop.org. “Conversations about online retailers are happening on Capitol Hill and it is time that Shop.org became a part of them.”

Shop.org’s initial advocacy agenda will build on lobbying efforts of its parent, the National Retail Federation, on issues such as card not present interchange fees and spyware. Other issues that Shop.org will explore include click fraud, patent trolling and net neutrality. Shop.org will also continue its work with NRF’s Association for Retail Technology Standards, helping to create benchmarks and guidelines for the industry.

“Though multi-channel retailers share many of the same concerns as other companies, the online community consistently faces a number of specialized issues that do not affect stores,” says Tracy Mullin, president and CEO of the National Retail Federation and a member of the Shop.org board of directors. “By focusing on the specific needs of online retailers, Shop.org will be able to expand upon the work that NRF has already accomplished in this area.”
