Phishing attacks decline in February over January

The number of unique e-mail phishing attacks in the U.S. declined by 4% in February over January, to 17,877 from 17,163, though the number of brands spoofed in the attacks rose to 105 from 101, the Anti-Phishing Working Group reports.

The number of phishing detected declined 6%, to 9,103 from 9,715, the group says.

Phishing attacks use the names and logos of legitimate businesses in e-mail messages that try to convince consumers to reveal their credit card account information, including passwords, in an attempt to use that information to conduct fraudulent online payments.

Most phishing attacks continue to be against financial institutions, which accounted for 89.5% of the attacks in February, down from 92.5% in January. Retailers accounted for 1.9% in February and 2% in January, the APWG says.
