Scripps acquires UK comparison shopping provider for $366 million
Media giant E.W. Scripps Co., owner of comparison shopping site Shopzilla.com, has acquired uSwitch.com, a comparison shopping provider for home services in the United Kingdom, for $366 million in cash.
Founded in 2000, uSwitch helps consumers compare rates on digital television, broadband, gas, electricity, home phone, credit cards and personal loans.
“The addition of uSwitch to our portfolio of interactive businesses, including Shopzilla, is intended to position Scripps to take full advantage of the rapid growth of online comparison shopping for both products and essential home services,” said Kenneth W. Lowe, president and CEO. “We believe the uSwitch service and brand provide a sturdy platform on which we can expand into Europe and beyond.”
Through its cable networks division, Scripps also operates HGTV.com, Foodnetwork.com, DIYnetwork.com, and FineLiving.com. On a combined basis, including Shopzilla and Scripps newspaper and broadcast television sites, Scripps serves about 35 million unique visitors per month, according to the company.
