Bluefly bets bonus bags boost buying


Bluefly Inc. has unveiled a handbag giveaway promotion that it’s betting will increase web traffic and sales.

Bluefly, which sells designer apparel and accessories, just launched the It-Bag-a-Day Giveaway. Shoppers register online to play a game where they must guess which of three shopping carts, shuffled around before their eyes, a handbag is in. If they guess correctly, they automatically are entered in that day’s giveaway, in which winners are randomly selected then notified by e-mail. The contest ends April 28.

The company, No. 123 in the Internet Retailer Top 400 Guide to Retail Web Sites, will be handing out designer bags from Emilio Pucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Isabella Fiore, Gucci, Bottega Venta, Chloe Silverado, Fendi, Chanel and Balenciaga.

Bluefly in 2005 hit $58.8 million in sales, an increase of 34.25% over 2004’s $43.8 million.
