Major League Baseball sets a record for online ticket sales

Online ticket sales to Major League Baseball games have topped 24 million, setting a record for the seventh year in a row. Total attendance for the 30 ballclubs is over 64 million, running 4% ahead of last year’s total of 76 million.

The tickets have been sold only at MLB.com and the web sites of the 30 clubs. More than half of the tickets sold online have used the print-at-home feature offered by all the teams’ web sites. That lets fans buy online without waiting in line at the stadium to pick up their tickets.

Most of the teams’ web sites also let fans searching for tickets see a diagram of the ballpark, according to MLB Advanced Media, the interactive media and Internet company of Major League Baseball, which is No. 84 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide.

A new feature offered this year by five clubs lets fans receive tickets through their mobile phones. A bar code is sent via text message to the handset and is scanned at the gate.
