|Why They're Hot:
Chinese smartphone manufacturer and retailer Xiaomi projects selling 15 million phones in 2013, mostly online, generating $4.1 billion in revenue. On the "Mi fans" section of its e-commerce site 4 million registered users download mobile apps and discuss their phones' features and functions with other users. Xiaomi invites fans to submit feedback and suggestions on its site, and based on that input, the company releases updates of its MIUI operating system every Friday. For example, based on user feedback, Xiaomi developed a user interface specifically for older consumers. Consumers outside of China may soon get to know Xiaomi: The company in August 2013 hired Hugo Barra, Google Inc.'s head of Android product management, to lead its global expansion.
