A personal touch

The e-retailers selected for the Hot 100 are nurturing sales by investing in personalization technology that helps consumer find the titles they are likely to enjoy.

Why They're Hot:

Netflix Inc. has made a fast comeback from a 2011 fiasco when it repriced its service in a way that sparked a customer rebellion. It can thank the gains from its streaming video service—global streamed membership jumped 37% year over year in Q3—which was no doubt boosted by three Emmy awards for its "House of Cards" original political thriller. Netflix also made life easier for the many families that share a Netflix account, providing different recommendations for Junior than the ones it makes for Dad. Netflix also launched a tool enabling online consumers who belong to Facebook to keep tabs on what their friends are watching—though the service enables consumers to hide what Netflix director of product innovation Cameron Johnson calls their "guilty pleasures."
