New ways to meet customers’ needs

These mass merchant e-retailers in this year’s Hot 100 are rolling out a steady stream of features that spur shoppers to make a purchase.



Why They're Hot:

It's hard to get lost at The web-only retailer sells some 1 million SKUs in such product categories as home improvement, pets and furniture. But even the most itinerant shopper here has a digital rope retracing her path back through the e-commerce forest. A search bar seems to float at the top of the screen, keeping track of what the shopper has put into her cart while also offering access to checkout, the retailer's departments, its shop-by-room feature and the Hayneedle Style Gallery, where detailed product images help spark purchase ideas centered around a holiday dining table, a living-room makeover and other themes. Meanwhile, the bottom of the screen displays recently viewed items and product suggestions based on that browsing—no compass needed.
