To encourage shippers to use smaller, more space-efficient packaging for products like cell phones, apparel and books, on Jan. 4 the U.S. Postal Service will launch a new pricing structure for Priority Mail Commercial Plus shipments based on volume measured in cubic feet.
The new pricing structure, which ranges from $4.22 to $15.33 depending on package size and shipping distance, is available to commercial shippers who send more than 250,000 packages a year through the Postal Service, a spokesman says. In addition, individual packages must weigh 20 pounds or less and be no larger than one-half cubic foot.
The new pricing is part of broader changes that will result in an overall average increase of 3.3% effective Jan. 4 for Priority Mail, which handles envelopes and small packages delivered typically within two or three days.
