Keynote Systems ups the ante on mobile web performance monitoring

Internet and mobile testing and measurement company Keynote Systems has introduced a new version of its Keynote Mobile Application Perspective, or MAP, an on-demand service that monitors mobile web content, from the user’s perspective, by emulating the software and hardware of more than 1,600 mobile devices.

Key to the company’s new version is the integration of Apple Inc.’s WebKit mobile browser engine, which is used by the majority of mobile web browsers, Keynote says. Another important addition is the ability to test and measure in two different fashions. First, technology executives looking simply to test availability can do so through a landline. And second, marketing, design and other executives can test over the air to see how mobile sites are rendering and performing.

The integration of the WebKit browser engine into MAP 4.0 expands the system’s mobile monitoring capability beyond simple wireless access protocol (WAP) content, a standard language for creating mobile web sites; now retailers can monitor full-featured HTML conventional and mobile web sites that contain JavaScript, Ajax, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and other complex web technologies, Keynote explains.

“Smartphones are driving the mobile market and their ability to access real web content is shaping the way we all work and play,” says Vik Chaudhary, vice president of product management and corporate development at Keynote. “These highly capable devices give users 24/7 web access, wherever they are. Smartphones are now an extension of the online experience and have become the source of a significant and ever-increasing portion of web traffic.”

Accurate performance monitoring of web content from a smartphone is critical in today’s increasingly mobile world, Chaudhary adds.

“Our MAP 4.0 release, with its two connection options, underscores Keynote’s commitment to give customers choice and the best solutions,” he says. “MAP over Air is the ideal solution for mobile business and product teams that need to monitor the true end-user experience, while MAP over Network is perfect for I.T. and operations teams requiring ongoing confidence that the correct content is available 24/7.”
