Blockbuster and TiVo launch an on-demand digital movie rental service

Blockbuster Inc. and TiVo Inc. this week launched a movie rental service that lets their subscribers download digital movies from Blockbuster.com directly to their TV sets connected to TiVo DVRs.

The Blockbuster On Demand service includes recent movie releases, including new titles like “Away We Go,” “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past,” and “Observe and Report,” as well as classic titles. Most rental fees range from $2.99 for classics to $3.99 for new releases.

Blockbuster, No. 37 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, says it will expand the movie catalog available through the new service, including select titles in high-definition movie format.

The Blockbuster On Demand service operates on several TiVo DVR models: Series 2, Series 3, HD and HD XL. Thousands of Blockbuster stores will sell TiVo DVRs, the companies say.

“We’re thrilled to give consumers another way to enjoy the movies they want most now with the convenience of their TiVo remote control in the comfort of their living room,” says Bruce Anderson, senior vice president and general manager of Blockbuster On Demand.

To access the new service, TiVo DVR subscribers go to the TiVo Central section of their DVR, click Video on Demand, then browse titles available for download and rent from Blockbuster. Users of the new service must have registered accounts with both TiVo and Blockbuster.

Blockbuster recently said it may close up to 25% of its 3,750 company-operated stores to raise capital for new ventures such as digital downloads and interactive kiosks.
