Symantec secures the top spot in online software sales in July

Symantec and McAfee, two retailers of computer security software, took the first and third spots, respectively, in the number of online software purchases in July, with Amazon.com sandwiched in between, according to Nielsen Online’s MegaView Online Retail report. Online food delivery service Schwan’s was tops in conversion rate at 35.2%.

The top 10 online retail categories based on average order size in July, according to the MegaView report, were:


  • Computer hardware, $260.83
  • Automotive, $127.24
  • Consumer electronics, $117.10
  • Office supplies, $94.18
  • Event & movie tickets, $87.60
  • Computer software, $78.93
  • Sporting goods/outdoor activities, $68.42
  • Child/baby care, $68.36
  • Home & garden, $67.03
  • Food & beverage, $65.69

The top 10 online retailers based on July conversion rate, according to the MegaView report, were:


  • Schwan’s, 35.2%
  • Keurig, 31.3%
  • ProFlowers, 26.0%
  • Vitacost.com, 22.5%
  • DrsFosterSmith.com, 22.4%
  • Blair.com, 22.4%
  • Woman Within, 21.3%
  • Amway Global, 20.5%
  • Roamans, 18.7%
  • Office Depot, 17.9%

The top online software retailers in July based on purchases, with purchases and customers in thousands, were:


  • Symantec, 313, 289
  • Amazon, 307, 241
  • McAfee, 243, 219
  • eBay, 66, 57
  • Best Buy, 27, 26

The top jewelry and watches online retailers in July, with purchases and customers in thousands, were:


  • eBay, 936, 323
  • HSN.com, 244, 131
