E-commerce stocks, which raced ahead of the broader market for most of 2009, have been slipping behind in recent weeks.
The Internet Retailer Online Retail Index, which tracks the shares of 25 online retailers and e-commerce technology providers, fell 1.05% last week, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down .52% and the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index declined .63%. Fifteen of the 25 stocks in the Online Retail Index were off last week.
For the year, however, the Online Retail Index remains well ahead of the market as a whole. The e-commerce index stands at 155.3, meaning it’s up 55.3% since Jan. 1, 2009. During the same span, the Dow is up 6.2% and the S&P 500 11.2%.
