Walgreen gives shoppers more ways to store prescription information online

Walgreen Co. is updating its e-commerce site with more options for customers to store prescription information.

Walgreen, No. 68 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, is updating Walgreens.com with Health Vault from Microsoft Corp., a secure data repository. By accessing Health Vault, shoppers will be able to store copies of their prescription records obtained from their health care providers, insurance plans, government programs and employers. Customers will also be able to upload information from personal computers and mobile devices and share secure information with health care providers and trainers.

"While many patients are already using Walgreens' online pharmacy to access their prescription history, they don't always provide that information to their doctors," says Walgreen senior vice president of health care information Don Huonker. "This service will make it easier for patients to share their information with multiple health care providers and even their caretakers, who can also be granted access to a patient's account with their permission."

With Health Vault, Walreens.com users have the option to store and share prescription information on other family members, including children and elders. "Registered Walgreens.com users are already able to access their complete prescription history for convenient refills, tax purposes or personal use," the retailer says.

Health Vault will debut later this year, although Walgreen has yet to set a date. The new program is part of an overall effort by Walgreen to update its web site with more social network and community features.
