Mass merchandise cataloger SkyMall Inc. has teamed with Aircell to provide Wi-Fi-based in-flight shopping to AirTran Airways customers. Shoppers who spend at least $75 with SkyMall using Aircell’s Gogo Inflight Internet on AirTran planes can have the $12.95 Gogo access fee refunded.
SkyMall, No. 151 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, also provides free Wi-Fi access for the duration of a flight to anyone making an in-flight purchase on SkyMall.com via the Gogo portal, says Casey Christ, vice president of airline marketing at SkyMall.
Members of AirTran’s rewards program also can get credit for every $50 spent on SkyMall merchandise. Details of the service are available in a printed menu on each Wi-Fi-equipped aircraft.
“Offering our customers in-flight shopping at SkyMall.com is another example of the things you can do with Wi-Fi on every flight,” says Tad Hutcheson, AirTran’s vice president of marketing and sales.
Jay Scannell, vice president of information technology, is speaking at the Internet Retailer Conference & Exhibition, June 15-18 in Boston, in a session titled Creating a plan for what to put on a mobile site.
