Aeropostale Inc. is finding its niche as a web retailer of affordable clothing for young people age 14-17.
In the first quarter, web sales for Aeropostale, No. 156 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, increased by 74% to $16.7 million from $9.6 million. Total sales for the quarter ended May 2 increased 21.3% to $408 million from $336.3 million while comparable-store sales grew 11%.
The web accounted for 4% of sales and 10% of growth across all channels in the first quarter. "The last three months, like the ten consecutive quarters that preceded it, was a period of record sales and record earnings for Aeropostale,” says CEO Julian R. Geiger. “We all know these results are extraordinary given the macro-economic climate in which we are operating.” Aeropostale’s net earnings in the first quarter increased year over year by 81.1% to $31.7 million from $17.5 million.
