GameFly acquires video game news source

GameFly Inc., an online game subscription service, has acquired Shacknews Ltd., the parent company of the video game news site Shacknews.com and videogames-related digital download site FileShack.com. Terms were not disclosed

Shacknews.com, more commonly known as “The Shack, ” was founded in 1995 and is rated by both comScore Inc. and Compete as one of the top five video game news web sites, says GameFly, No. 271 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide.

FileShack.com carries PC game patches, or fixes, along with video, beta games and trailers for video games on all console platforms.

GameFly says it plans to maintain the Shacknews.com editorial team, while offering technology and infrastructure resources to support growth.

“Shacknews.com and FileShack.com are a perfect fit for GameFly as we continue to expand and diversify our offering,” says David Hodess, GameFly CEO. “With its avid, engaged community and commitment to providing an independent voice for gamers seeking the most accurate and up-to-date news and information, it goes to the core of our vision as a company, which is to be the ultimate resource for the entire gaming community.”

GameFly offers more than 6,000 game titles, with rental plans starting at $15.95 a month.
