Postal Service scrambles to fix its online shipping tools

The U.S. Postal Service said today it was working with external technology partners to fix an intermittent problem that has made several of its online shipping tools unavailable to shippers.

“We’re very hopeful to have this fully restored by the end of today,” a spokesman said today. Among the services that have been intermittently unavailable are the Click and Ship, ZIP code locator and rate-finder tools. Other services including the online store for buying stamps and other products have been consistently available, the spokesman says.

Justin Meats, vice president of e-commerce at 1st in Video Music World Inc., a web-only retailer of consumer electronics, golfing products and travel services, said the unavailability of the rate finder tool has resulted in his comapny having to take more time to process some orders and possibly pay higher rates to carriers other than U.S.P.S.

The Postal Service spokesman said late this afternoon that online tools operating properly, in addition to the online store, included P.O. Box Online, Post Office Locator, Calculate Postage, Carrier Pickup, eService and Customer First. Shippers experiencing problems can call 1-800-ASK-USPS for updated information.

USPS.com serves about 1.2 million unique visitors daily, the spokesman says.
