More consumers favor the web for holiday shopping, study says

21% of U.S. consumers plan to shop primarily or entirely on the Internet during this year's holiday shopping season, up from 19% last year, and retail e-commerce sites rank second to discount department stores as a destination for gift buying, consulting firm Deloitte LLP says in a new report.

Deloitte's 23rd Annual Holiday Retail Survey found that a record 71% of consumers will spend at least part of their holiday budgets online this year, up from 65% in 2004. The survey contacted more than 13,000 consumers.

The survey also found:

  • 24% of total holiday budgeted dollars are expected to be spent on the web, up from 22% last year and 19% in 2004;
  • 36% of consumers say they will shop more online and in catalogs this year to save on gasoline;
  • 52% of consumers will look for free-shipping offers from online retailers;
  • 70% of consumers will research products online before visiting a physical store;
  • 9% of consumers say theywill use their mobile phones to assist with online and in-store shopping; among 18-29-year-old consumers, this percentage rises to 17%;
  • 56% of consumers have shopped across multiple retailing channels in the past year, and have often purchased a product in one channel after researching it in another;
  • 44% of consumers say they are willing to pay more for green gifts.
