Closeout retailer Big Lots promises big deals at its new e-commerce site

Closeout retailer Big Lots Inc. has launched an e-commerce site, promising to deliver the same “treasure hunt atmosphere” it provides in its 1,361 stores in 47 states.

The centerpiece of the new site is a deal of the day that will be posted at 8 a.m. Eastern time each morning on limited quantities of an item. Shoppers can sign up for e-mail alerts or put a deal-of-the-day widget on their computers to keep up with the latest offer.

"We are excited about the start of our e-commerce business today and the opportunity to bring closeout shopping to the internet in a Big Lots way,” says Steve Fishman, chairman, CEO and president. “The online deal of the day concept is something that we believe is fun and different, and with unbelievable values and great brands, it's just in time for the holidays.”

Today’s deal of the day featured two high-definition television sets. The BigLots.com site allows visitors to comment on the offer—and most of the comments suggested similar TVs were available for less on other web sites.

The site highlights deals available in Big Lots stores. It also offers an aisle-by-aisle tour of a typical Big Lots store. As the visitor’s mouse moves over a section of the store an icon pops up showing what’s sold in each area. Visitors can click on the icons to see what’s available online in such categories as furniture, electronics, baby gear, domestics and home décor.

Big Lots reported $2.26 billion in sales for the first six months of its current fiscal year, a period that ended Aug. 2.
