FedEx to increase overnight shipping rates by 6.9%

FedEx Express, which provides next-day deliveries to residential and business addresses through air transport, will increase its shipping rates by an average of 6.9% effective Jan. 5, 2009, FedEx Corp. says.

The rate increase will be partially offset by a reduction in the company’s fuel surcharge, a FedEx spokesman says. FedEx Express handles packages of up to 150 pounds.

Shipping rates for FedEx Ground will also rise next year, though FedEx won’t announce the increases until later this year, the company says. FedEx Ground, which also handles small packages up to 150 pounds, delivers usually within two or three days to business and residential addresses in the U.S. Its services include FedEx Home Delivery, which provides Saturday deliveries and lets recipients request particular delivery time periods.
