IT jobs are dwindling and salaries are going down, according to two recent reports on the market for technology staffers. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that information technology jobs fell by 13,000 in July and 44,000 over the past year. Hiring demand is at the lowest level since 2004, reports Janco Associates, an IT staffing research company.
Janco also reports that the average IT salary, at $79,000, has been virtually flat for the past 12 months. IT executives at large enterprises average $144,645 today vs. $143,106 a year ago. Middle managers come in at $79,777 vs. $78,845 and staff at $66,433 vs. $66,517.
At mid-size companies, IT executives average $131,793 vs. $131,321 a year ago; middle managers, $74,701 vs. $74,645, and staff, $60,736 vs. $60,442.
Hiring is being limited to key replacements and those positions are being replaced at lower salary levels, Janco reports, adding that further cost pressures could force more companies to send their IT jobs overseas.
Janco’s Mid Year 2008 IT Salary Survey also reported that positions that were in high demand in the fourth quarter of 2007, such as chief security officers and others to develop Web 2.0 applications, are now back to normal hiring patterns.
